The ruby & sapphire mines at Pailin, Cambodia

 

Pailin is situated on the western side of Cambodia close to the Thai boarder. The Pailin valley produces very fine, clean blue sapphires and iron-rich rubies. The mines were at their most productive during the 1990's and although there is much less activity there now, some very fine stones are still unearthed in Pailin. Read more here ...

 

 

Bo Ploi in Kanchanaburi has been a major source of blue sapphires for many years. In recent years the rising cost of fuel along with lower yields has meant there are much fewer Kanchanaburi / Thai sapphires on the market. There are still a few smaller scale operations which occasionally produce fine, large sized blue sapphires. Read more here...

The ruby mines at Bo Rai have been extensively worked for many years. Production from the mines peaked during this time making Bo Rai the premier source of rubies. Today the area is virtually exhausted although some people still hunt for rubies on private land and in the rivers. Locals still say there are rubies waiting to be unearthed in the mountains which border Cambodia but government restrictions and the danger of unexploded mines make working the area impossible. Studying the inclusions in gemstones is one of the most intriguing areas in gemmology. Many gems contain unique inclusions which are used by gemmologists to identify gems and can also be used to determine the geographical origin of a particular gem. Rubies and sapphires contain some of the most fascinating of all gemstones. Demantoid garnets

 

Demantoid garnets - the highly prized variety of the garnet family. Fine quality gems are very rare and sort after by gem collectors around the world. The finest gems are said to come from the deposits in the Ural Mountains. The top quality Russian demantoids have a green hue which matches the best emeralds or jade. Read more here ...

 

 

 

In the latter part of 2004 large quantities of inexpensive red corundum appeared on the market in large quantities. These stones were being marketed as 'Pao Mai' rubies. They were a result of a new treatment where by low grade, heavily included and fractured red corundum crystals where being heated with lead oxide paste.
